General Research Interests:

Dr. Bergmann's research has provided significant insights into the regulation and function of T and B cells during viral infections of the central nervous system (CNS) associated with demyelination. Her studies on the distribution, trafficking, and quantitation of virus specific T cells during acute infection have led to the discovery of long-term retention of functionally impaired T cells within the CNS in the absence of infectious virus. The complex relationship between virus and host was further highlighted by the finding that antibody secreting cells in the CNS are vital to prevent virus from reemerging during persistence.
