The Glasswash Facility maintains a stock of all types of sterile laboratory glassware and pipettes in the common storage area. This facility provides glass washing and sterilization to all investigators within the Lerner Research Institute. We charge back to each department on a monthly basis.
Glassware Services:
- Collection of glassware from laboratories.
- Washing, autoclaving and baking glassware for sterilization.
- Stocks of all types of sterile glassware available in the common area for researchers (e.g Beakers, Flasks, Bottles, Cylinders, funnels).
- Stocks of sterile glass pipettes (sizes 1ml, 2ml, 5ml, 10ml, 25ml).
- Autoclaving liquids and wrapped items.
- Sterile Milli-Q water.
- Training new employees to operate the autoclaving and glasswash equipment.
Note: Soft water is used in the washing process. Pure water is used as a final rinse in all procedures of the washing process.
Each laboratory entry is equipped with a cart and tub containing sanitizing solution to soak glassware overnight. Each day the Laboratory Assistant takes the cart to the central glasswash area for washing. The tubs are replaced with fresh water and solution.
There are pipette jars provided for soaking pipettes, the pipettes are collected every day and prepared by the glasswash personnel.
Sterile glassware and pipettes are provided in the common glassware storage area on the 1st floor of the Lerner Building (NB1). The Laboratory Assistants are responsible for stocking the cabinets in each department.
Quality Control
All glassware is either baked @180° for 5 hours or autoclaved @121° to ensure sterilization has been reached. In addition to this, biological indicators and steam strips are used for each autoclaved load. Dry heat indicators are used in the hot air ovens. All glassware is thoroughly inspected before stocking in the common glassware area.
