Research interest

The major activity has been the ongoing development and testing in vitro and acute in vivo of a unique small continuous flow Total Artificial Heart which has a single moving part. This effort is funded with a 4 year NIH grant and we are into the second year. Hemolysis testing has shown clinically acceptable low values and acute in vivo studies have confirmed the bench data. The latest pump iteration is fabricated from titanium components and will be used in a chronic in vivo study to assess biocompatibility.

In other words ...

With NIH funding, I lead a team developing and testing a unique artificial heart to completely replace a failing human heart. It has a single moving component and will fit essentially all adults and many teens. The pump is a continuation of work on rotary pumps – a major effort in my lab. Initial testing has shown good results, including very little damage to red blood cells. This "continuous flow" device now has an optional pulse provision.
