Through cardiovascular, metabolic and kidney research in clinic and lab environments, our researchers focus on the biology influencing disease. Our research efforts focus on improving diagnoses and identifying new pathways and treatments that improve the quality of life for patients with heart, blood and kidney diseases.

Scientists and clinicians in Cleveland Clinic's Department of Heart, Blood & Kidney Research use multidisciplinary approaches to study processes that contribute to kidney and cardiovascular system dysfunction. Conditions like diabetes, hypertension and obesity, as well as the effects of aging, are common risk factors for kidney and cardiovascular diseases. Integration of studies of blood disorders and metabolic conditions, often linked to these conditions, enables our research teams to further understand pathophysiological mechanisms and develop novel treatment strategies.

Areas of Focus
  • Discovering mechanisms linking heart, vascular and kidney diseases with diabetes, obesity, nutrition, age-related disorders and the gut microbiome.
  • Improving understanding of the interface between the circulatory system and blood, including diseases involving the vessel wall, thrombosis and bone marrow disorders.
  • Advancing innovative treatment approaches targeting novel pathways that contribute to cardiovascular, hematologic, kidney and metabolic diseases.
