Dr. Alpert is a health communication scientist dedicated to improving interactions between patients, providers, and caregivers. His research examines how complex discussions occur related to dementia and end-of-life. Using mixed methods, with a particular emphasis on qualitative approaches, Dr. Alpert explores patterns of communication and identifies barriers that prevent meaningful discussions about advance care planning, disease progression, and treatment preferences in serious illness.
Dr. Alpert has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals, such as the Annals of Internal Medicine, Patient Education and Counseling, and Health Communication. He was awarded an R03 from the National Cancer Institute to develop a web-based, interactive guide to enhance patient–-clinician electronic communication. Dr. Alpert currently has a K01 from the National Institute on Aging to explore the patient–-caregiver–-clinician communication process.

Informal caregivers’ communication and informational needs when caring for patients with dementia
As the number of Americans who suffer from dementia increases, informal caregivers—unpaid individuals caring for a relative or friend—are often overwhelmed and are underprepared to navigate the requirements of daily care. As the disease progresses, measures can be taken to reduce avoidable hospitalizations and plan for end-of-life. The goal of this project is to understand the communication, informational, and support needs of informal caregivers.
Digital communication between patients and clinicians
This project focuses on improving the use of communication occurring through the patient portal, including secure messaging and use of artificial intelligence ambient listening technology to generate clinical notes.
