About Us

Paul E. DiCorleto, PhDWelcome to Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Research Institute. Cleveland Clinic has a long-standing reputation for excellence in patient care, education and clinical and basic research. USNews & World Report has consistently ranked Cleveland Clinic among the best hospitals in the USA. In 2011, it ranked Cleveland Clinic as the fourth best hospital overall in the United States, and our Heart Center as the top in the nation for the 17th consecutive year.

The Lerner Research Institute is home to Cleveland Clinic's laboratory-based, translational and clinical research. Nearly 200 investigators and their teams pursue a wide range of biomedical questions. The Lerner Research Institute is a growing institution and this number increases every year. Altogether, nearly 2,000 scientists and support personnel work at the Lerner Research Institute. This includes more than 250 faculty-level scientists, over 271 postdoctoral fellows and nearly 180 graduate students.

Consider:

  • Research programs focus on: cardiovascular, cancer, neurologic, musculoskeletal, allergic and immunologic, eye, metabolic, and infectious diseases.
  • Lerner Research Institute is committed to academic excellence, and the great majority of its faculty also have appointments at the nearby Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Kent State University, and/or University of Akron. It also has created the Molecular Medicine PhD Program. Nearly 180 graduate students conduct their thesis research at the Lerner Research Institute.
  • Federal funding alone was over $106 million in 2010. The total research budget (external and internal sources) exceeded $240 million in 2010.
  • In 2010, Faculty research appeared in nearly 1,400 publications, including 1,300 journal articles, over 80 book chapters and many books. Many of these were in highly respected peer-reviewed high-impact journals.
  • Our investigators generated 14 licenses, 19 patents and three spin-off companies in 2010 alone.
  • The research laboratories at the Lerner Research Institute are supported by an outstanding array of subsidized, state-of-the-art Core Facilities. The interactive spirit at the Lerner Research Institute makes this a truly exciting place to do research!
  • Our Center for Genomics Research opened in early 2005. The facility places Lerner Research Institute at the forefront of this exciting area of exploration and discovery. Overall, the Institute has a dedicated 700,000 square feet of laboratory and clinical research space.
  • The Lerner Research Institute is an integral part of the new Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University -- dedicated to training the next generation of physician-scientists.

In addition to basic research at the Lerner Research Institute, most clinical departments are conducting translational and clinical research, including the Cole Eye Institute and the Taussig Cancer Center to name just two. Numerous Lerner Research Institute investigators hold secondary appointments in clinical departments, and many clinicians hold appointments in Lerner Research Institute departments. The high enthusiasm for applying the latest basic scientific knowledge to clinically relevant questions leads to many fruitful collaborations and a rapid transition from benchtop to bedside.

I welcome you to the Lerner Research Institute.
