Institute Announces Latest Grant Recipients

Five Institute researchers received grants totaling nearly $1.5 million. The list shows one-year totals provided by the Office of Sponsored Research and Projects:

Gerald Beck, PhD, Quantitative Health Sciences, was awarded $335,000 over 1 year for "Frequent Hemodialysis Network Data Coordinating Center." Funded by the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases/NIH.

Charis Eng, MD, PhD, Chair, Genomic Medicine Institute, was awarded $199,980 over 1 year for "Genes that Affect Mitochondrial Function as Novel Mediators of Breast Cancer Susceptibility . . ." Funded by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Dr. Eng holds the Sondra J. & Stephen R. Hardis Chair in Cancer Genomic Medicine.

Ariel Feldstein, MD, Cell Biology and Section Head, Pediatric Research, Pediatric Gastroenterology/Pediatric Institute and Children's Hospital, was awarded $376,800 over 1 year for "Caspase Dependent Cell Death in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease." Funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases/NIH.

Paul Fox, PhD, Cell Biology, was awarded $457,917 over 1 year for "Novel Mouse Models of Inflammation-Resolution." Funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute/NIH.

William A. Smith, DEng, PE, Biomedical Engineering, was awarded $100,000 over 1 year for "Undergraduate Engineering Project" as part of the Research Experiences for Undergraduates program. Funded by the National Science Foundation.
