Cleveland Clinic prepares the next generation of researchers through partnering with local universities across its locations.
Cleveland Clinic is preparing the next generation of healthcare and life sciences researchers by creating research training opportunities around the world at the intersection of clinical practice and lab-based discovery.
As an academic medical center, research is a critical piece of supporting Cleveland Clinic’s core belief that everyone deserves world-class care. The research process starts with an idea, which can come from an investigator in a lab or a clinician at the bedside. Cleveland Clinic investigators and clinicians are trained to collaborate to find the best solution, sharing expertise and approaching the problem from multiple perspectives. This integrated mindset is also taught in Cleveland Clinic’s training and education programs.
“With Cleveland Clinic’s global presence, we have a unique opportunity to share our expertise and develop an international talent pipeline,” says Christine Moravec, PhD, Associate Chief, Research Training. “Through our programs, students and trainees can learn our best practices and access our technology no matter where they are located.”
Take a look at some examples of our expanding research training programs across the country and the world:
Through education partnerships, learners gain access to specialty expertise from Cleveland Clinic locations across the system. Cleveland Clinic’s Florida Research and Innovation Center (FRIC) specializes in research related to infectious diseases, inflammatory diseases and cancer. FRIC researchers investigate conditions that disproportionately affect their Treasure Coast communities, like lymphomas and insect-transmitted viruses. FRIC recently partnered with Florida Atlantic University to support graduate students who want hands-on experience in these topics.
Other education partnerships include high school internships, vocational training programs and strategic clinical education partnerships with institutions including Indian River State College and Florida International University.
After Cleveland Clinic launched its first hospital in London in 2022, partnerships grew to include research and education. A cornerstone of this effort is a postdoctoral exchange program that brings together Cleveland Clinic’s main campus, Cleveland Clinic London and Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). The program is designed to advance international research collaboration and training by placing fellows at Cleveland Clinic’s main campus for six months to develop their research, followed by six months in London working across Cleveland Clinic London and QMUL.
The inaugural exchange will involve a postdoctoral fellow in Inflammation & Immunity with a clinical affiliation in the Digestive Disease Institute, reflecting an early emphasis on translational research and laying the groundwork for future global exchanges.
The Research Observership Program brings caregivers from Cleveland Clinic’s global sites to the main campus in Cleveland, Ohio, for immersive exposure to the full research lifecycle. Participants gain meaningful insight into effective research practices through structured observation and engagement.
Early cohorts have included caregivers from Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi—medical students, nurses and pharmacists—participating in a cancer-focused observership. The program provides a comprehensive introduction to Cleveland Clinic’s clinical research environment while facilitating the transfer of best practices. Through this program, Cleveland Clinic Research is advancing its global mission to expand research capacity and foster the adoption of best practices across its international network.
