Florian Rieder Honored for IBD Research and Care With Sherman Prize

The award recognizes Dr. Rieder for his achievements in advancing the development of new therapies to treat fibrostenosis (narrowing of the gut due to excessive scar tissue).

Florian Rieder, MD, Assistant Staff, Department of Inflammation & Immunity, was awarded the 2019 Sherman Emerging Leader Prize for his early career contributions to the fields of inflammatory bowel disease research and care. The prestigious award was presented at the 2019 Advances in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases annual conference.

Dr. Rieder, who is also a practicing physician in the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, has spent his career treating patients living with inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis. Inspired by scientific curiosity and his desire to understand and solve the problems faced by his patients, he has also dedicated himself to investigating in the lab the pathological causes of disease and possible new treatments.

The award recognizes Dr. Rieder for his achievements in advancing the development of new therapies to treat fibrostenosis (narrowing of the gut due to excessive scar tissue). While advances have been made in fibrotic disease of the liver, heart and skin, there are currently no anti-fibrotic therapies available for use in patients with Crohn’s—Dr. Rieder is working diligently to change this reality for CD patients.

In addition to caring for his patients and advancing research, Dr. Rider is deeply committed to educating the next generation of scientists and care providers.

The Sherman Emerging Leader Prize provides $25,000, which Dr. Rieder will use to support his research into new anti-fibrotic therapies.
